Down the Chesapeake Bay…
November was finally the time that the boat work was done…. for now only, I am sure….. We got to enjoy a cute last minute Halloween in Eastport with some fairly half arsed decorations and costumes compared to normal, and found a few fun Halloween feast treats to try. Nothing like the usual feast with dry ice that we have done before, but fun nonetheless. Who knows where we will be next Halloween as well!
By now we were actively looking for weather windows to get down the bay - the fall weather was well and truly here and we did NOT have big winter coats with us as it wasn’t in our travel plans to stay cold :) We sadly missed one great weather window as we got out the river and our tachs and seemingly everything failed, so we sadly headed back to Port Annapolis Marina again and were there another 2 weeks. Waiting….. waiting……
Then it was time. We provisioned up as much as we could, and headed down the Bay. Already it was the furthest we had gone by the time we got to Solomons. Met some nice people there from all over the world, all heading south like we were. We explored the little Maritime Museum there, which was great, we have done a few of these museums now on the Bay and each tells a slightly different story of the same history but they are really well done and the volunteers are lovely and well informed.
Next stop was Deltaville. A really tight entrance that we just made before sunset, and a cute anchorage. Ended up heading to provision with Oscar and Bethan to the grocery store that was in fact 3 miles each way, and they were scooting on a main road with no sidewalk. #parentingfail…… We are definitely having to think through the logistics of life a lot more, using the dinghy as our car, the folding bike, scooters for the kids, and working out how to balance way too much stuff on the bike to get home to the boat!
And then to Norfolk. Felt like a huge achievement to get to this low part of the Bay. This is where we would wait to get the right weather to round Cape Hatteras and get out into the Atlantic. Norfolk was great, our anchorage for the week was directly opposite the huge USS Wisconsin battleship as part of the museum, and had so much to keep everyone interested. As we came into Norfolk you sail past the US Navy yards which is just a line of Battleship after Air Carrier after Battleship. Really amazing to see their scale. Continued to get more provisions in and watch the weather. Made some more buddy boat friends and then headed to Hampton to be ready to head out for our continuing journey.
